Lisbon
Lisbon is a city best understood from above first, and then on foot. The sequence starts on the castle hill, looking over terracotta roofs to the Tagus, and works its way down through the lanes of Alfama, past the Sé and the roofless Carmo convent, onto the Glória funicular and the trams of the Baixa.
Then comes the long, flat stretch by the water: Praça do Comércio, the Cais das Colunas, the docks beneath the 25 de Abril bridge and finally Belém, with its tower, its monastery and its evening ferries. Look out for the tiles, the cats and the washing lines along the way. They are as much a part of the city as the monuments.
