Venice
Venice in winter keeps strange hours. The sequence begins before sunrise, with mist on the water off the Punta della Dogana and the Piazzetta still empty under its lamps, then follows the grey days, and the occasional brilliant blue one, along the Grand Canal from the Rialto to the Accademia.
In the middle comes the high water: acqua alta spreading across Campo Santa Margherita and over the fondamente of Dorsoduro. After that come the quieter canals and bridges of Cannaregio, Castello and the Giudecca, a boat out across the lagoon to Burano and Murano, and finally the city after dark, when the campi empty out and the fog settles back over the Salute.
