Kyoto
Kyoto rewards slow walking more than almost any city we know. Its great temples sit at the edges, pressed against wooded hills, and the lanes between them still have timber fronts, bamboo blinds and paper lanterns.
This sequence moves from the stone streets of Higashiyama and the shrines of Gion to the torii paths of Fushimi Inari, west to the bamboo groves and river boats of Arashiyama, and south to the temples of Uji. The frames come from across the year: maples at Kiyomizu-dera and Eikan-dō in November, cherry blossom at Ryōan-ji, green summer gardens at the Heian Shrine, and Mount Hiei after a rare heavy snowfall.
