Dolomites
The Dolomites are pale towers, walls and pinnacles of limestone and dolomite rock standing over some of the greenest pasture in the Alps, with a hut or a hay barn on almost every slope. Ladin, German and Italian are all spoken here, often in the same valley, so most places answer to two or three names.
This sequence keeps to high summer. It begins with the churches and farmhouses of Val di Funes and Val Gardena, climbs into the stony upland of the Puez-Odle, and looks at the Sella and Sassolungo from their passes. From there it runs east through Val Badia to the cloud-wrapped peaks around Cortina, the lakes of Sorapis and Coldai and the Tre Cime, before a last look west at the Brenta group in the evening light.
