Canyon Country
The Colorado Plateau is sandstone country: a high, dry tableland that rivers and frost have cut into canyons, arches, spires and amphitheatres, most of it the colour of rust or brick.
This sequence follows a loop through southern Utah and northern Arizona in the order we drove it. It starts among the cliffs of Zion and climbs to the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon, where late snow still lay along the rim, then crosses to the arches and fins outside Moab. From there it drops south onto Navajo land, from the long straight of US Route 163 at dawn to the Mittens at sunset, and finishes in the slot canyons near Page, where the only light arrives second-hand off the walls.
