Skye & the Western Highlands
The road from the central Highlands to Skye crosses some of the emptiest country in Britain: Rannoch Moor, the deep trench of Glen Coe, the sea lochs of Lochalsh and finally the bridge over to the island.
This gallery follows that line north and west. It starts among the autumn grasses around Loch Tay, Bridge of Orchy and Glen Coe, passes Eilean Donan and the long shore of Loch Ness, then crosses to Skye for the basalt cliffs of Neist Point, the slipped ridge of the Quiraing, the rounded Red Cuillin above Broadford and the Highland cattle that wander the northern headlands. The frames span the seasons, so green summer grass sits beside October rust and a late dusting of snow.
